Snacks with Friends

Snacks with Friends

When Hannah has a friend over we’re always sure to put together a little snack for the girls to enjoy together.  They all know that when they come over to the rainbow house the snacks will be fruits and veggies!  We don’t have the typical and popular “kid snacks” around here (we find it’s just easier to not bring that kind of food into the house…less temptation that way) so we make sure to always have a good variety of produce so that her friends can choose

Healthy Eating is Love

Healthy Eating is Love

When we feed our kids (and ourselves) healthy food it is an expression of love because it shows that we give importance to good health. Being healthy and having healthy kids is something that we can easily take for granted…it can be one of those things that we don’t appreciate until it’s gone! My dad passed away 23 years ago on this day, he had cancer and a number of other health issues…healthy eating was never tops on his list. I think losing him when I was at such a you

Rockin’ Radicchio

Rockin’ Radicchio

During our last grocery shop, Hannah picked up a Radicchio and declared that we just had to try it!! It really is a cute little thing and when we peeled the leaves it felt just like deflated balloons! Hannah ate some raw, I added some leaves to my morning juice and the rest we added to our baby spinach salad. We found it to have a slightly bitter taste, we’ve never tried these before so we don’t have much of a reference point for what a good one should look and taste like! How do yo

You can watch it for free for the next two days…click here and prepare to be motivated, shocked, inspired and ready to take action! When it comes down to it we are all ultimately responsible for our health, the food we choose to put into our bodies and that our of children and for making positive choices that make a difference.  Don’t wait for a government, an organization or anyone to

Be amazed by Bees!!

When we were designing our new graphics for our rainbow chart and packaging it was really important to me to add in a bee because they play such an important role when it comes to fruits and veggies…in short…we NEED them!!!!  I’m so excited to share this guest blog post all about bees by Joanna Runciman of Actual Organics!  Enjoy… In wonder of bees Eating fresh raspberries this morning I got to wondering about bees.  Birds and bees jokes aside, I rarely stopped and th

Pasta Dinner – Kids Cook Monday Series

Pasta Dinner – Kids Cook Monday Series

This weekend Hannah prepared a kamut pasta dish for us, lucky for her, Daddy had just made a batch of pasta sauce so she said it was a very easy meal to make because all she had to do was prepare the pasta and a spinach ceasar salad. Her favorite part was stirring the big pot of pasta pretending to be a witch and cackling loudly!  When kids are in the kitchen you never know what will happen next…or if you’re going to get turned into a frog! Cooking is just like any other life skill

Food Play

Getting kids to eat their fruits and veggies takes a combination of a lot of things! If you create a culture in your home where fruits and vegetables are fun and enjoyable it helps to reinforce the idea that produce is our friend! Play time is a great time to include fruits and veggies! I think play is practice for life! Through play, kids can learn to appreciate fruits and vegetables and connect the fact that they are part of making healthy choices for themselves! We had a great time making ou

Why So Picky???

Why So Picky???

Trying to feed a picky eater is not a very fun task…I know because I do it every day…with myself! I’m getting much better because I have made it my goal to become a more adventurous eater! When I was little I’d go so far as to pick the grated carrots out of carrot cake…my poor mom had it rough! It’s challenging to be a picky eater and a parent who knows the importance of setting a good example when it comes to healthy eating. If you aren’t a picky eater

Making A Difference with Food Choices

Making A Difference with Food Choices

Sometimes when problems seem so large and almost insurmountable, it can seem like the choices we make are insignificant, that it really doesn’t make a difference to help solve the problem.  The current health condition of families and kids in particular, across North America is one of those big problems.  There is a lot of finger pointing and blame shifting at who’s fault it is that childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing.  I think it’s going to take a lot of collaborative

Healthy Snacks by Color – PURPLE

This is our final day of our snacks by color series and it happens to be my daughters favorite color…PURPLE!!!!  It can be a challenging color group to eat everyday as there aren’t as many options as the other 4 color groups. Hannah enjoyed snacking on olives, frozen blueberries and purple carrots! Some other purple snack ideas: Eggplant chips *here is our In The Rainbow Kitchen video on how to make them Blackberries Raisins Grapes Cabbage Prunes Dried Figs Purple Pepper Eating a Ra
