Baked Blueberry French Toast – Kids Cook Monday Series

posted by: Kia

Hannah wanted to try making a breakfast meal for us this week and let me tell you it was well worth the effort!  And there was definitely a lot of effort!

I am getting much better at just letting her do things on her own without chiming in with my advice on how to do it easier or faster!  It’s been a fantastic lesson for me in letting her find her own ways of doing things in the kitchen…in fact it’s also carried on outside of cooking…I’m finding it easier to let her spread her wings a bit.  She’ll always be my little girl but I think her transition into her tween years will be easier if I’m not holding on quite so tight!

This week I made granola bars as she made her french toast so I was in the kitchen but busy doing my own thing!  At one point Hannah had to separate the whites from the egg yolks, she’s never done this on her own before so I was curious to see what would happen.  Her first attempt didn’t go very well, the yolk ended up in the bowl, the second attempt didn’t go much better as the yolk broke so half went into the bowl.  Luckily for her the recipe called for 2 whole eggs and 2 egg whites so I suggested that she could just use those as her two whole eggs…the relief on her face was precious!

She very slowly was able to get the egg whites from her 3 egg in a method I’ve never seen before :)   I wanted to jump in at that point and do it for her or tell her how to do it but I’m proud to say that I waited until she asked me for advice. I happily demonstrated how I do it (my recipe needed an egg too so I used mine as an example) and then encouraged her do it with her egg.  Worked like a charm and she was so happy!

There were a couple of other challenging steps for Hannah in this recipe but she kept going and this morning when we bit into her delicious breakfast she announced that it was “totally worth all that hard work!” and I had to agree!

Every time we give our kids a chance to try something new it enables them to add to their toolbox of skills! It’s our goal that by the time Hannah is ready to the leave the nest that she will be confident in her cooking abilities and will want to continue making healthy food choices for herself!

Happy Healthy Cooking,
Kia

  1. Whozat says:

Showed this to my little one, and now I think we have to make French toast. (Darn the luck ;-) ) Not sure if I can get her to go for the blueberries, though.

Also, I’ve been told to ask you what your dog’s name is :-)

  2. Oh my goodness…how did I miss this?!?! Looks SO yummy! And what an adorable pup! ;)
