Persimmons – A New Fruit Adventure

Persimmons – A New Fruit Adventure

We were really curious to try this orange fruit that looks like a cross between a tomato and an apple! We each had a slice…it was pretty good! The inside was soft and the skin is kind of tough…almost a bit crunchy! I didn’t find that it had a lot of flavor but it was still enjoyable. I’m sure there are plenty of recipes using this fruit…but the easiest way is just to cut it up and eat it! You could add persimmon slices to salads or puree them to make smoothies, a topping for panca

Fun Ways to Celebrate Eating a Rainbow!

The biggest reward of eating a rainbow is a healthy body! Of course for kids, having a weekly or monthly celebration or a healthy reward is something more tangible that they can work towards. The way it works in our house is, if our daughter eats a rainbow for 6 days in a row, she then gets to choose a fun activity for the family to do together on the 7th day. Here are some celebration ideas we’d like to share with you: 1. picnic at a park 2. family bike ride 3. going for a hike 4. making

Longans – Lychee’s Cousin!

In our ongoing quest to be food adventurers we decided to try Longans. They are a cousin to the more popular Lychee and they just look so cute. Their light brown skin encloses delicious translucent, juicy soft flesh that is similar to a peeled grape. They have a large black inedible seed in the middle so you just eat the flesh around the seed. We weren’t sure if we’d like these so we all gave them a tiny nibble…and then we couldn’t get enough! It has a very nice sweet t

Purple Kale ~ beautiful and delicious!

When we think about eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables it’s fairly easy to get in your green, red, orange and yellow…but the blue/purple color group can be trickier to work into your diet every day! I am always on the lookout for purple produce. Purple happens to be my daughter’s favorite color so when we go grocery shopping she is always the first to spot anything purple! We were both excited when we came across some purple kale!! We’ve been enjoying our green

Valentine’s Day is Not Just About Chocolates!

posted by: Kia

I have been a huge fan of Today I Ate a Rainbow for ages and was so excited to be asked to contribute as a momma trying to teach a lot of Kia’s principles to my babe. So it’s almost Valentine’s Day, and I was planning on making recycled collage Valentines with my 3 year old daughter today. I got out the glue & cool paper, lace, even got heart shaped paper cutters…. to find that she had done amazing collage cards at her pre-school program today, and I didn’t think sh
