Healthy Snacks by Color – GREEN

posted by: Kia

Welcome to Green snack day!! Getting our kids to eat green fruits and veggies is so important for their optimum health as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytonutrients!  If that isn’t an easy task at your house I would highly suggest making green smoothies or juice (if you have a juicer)!  It’s an easy way to get those greens into your kids!  We usually put in a few cups of whatever fruit we have on hand, a cup of baby spinach and a cup of either coconut water or apple juice.  If you aren’t using any frozen fruit it’s a good idea to add some ice cubes to make the smoothie nice and cold!  If you think your kids won’t been keen on the green color of the smoothie just add blueberries to cover up that green!  You can also start off with 1/2 cup of spinach or kale rather than the full cup!

Hannah had sugar snap peas, cucumber slices and a tropical green smoothie! She ate the parsley garnish too :)

Here are some other ideas for healthy GREEN snacks:

Broccoli
Celery
Grapes
Green Pepper slices
Honeydew Melon
Kiwi

Our final stop on our food rainbow will be Blue/Purple snacks!

Happy Healthy Eating,
Kia

I like to make smoothies with strawberries, blueberries, banana and spinach which, as you can imagine, adds up to not a very pretty color.

My trick (more for myself than my daughter, who’s not too keen on the strawberry seeds, and won’t usually drink them) is to just use an opaque travel mug with a straw. Then I don’t have to see it, and I can pretend that it’s the pretty pink or purple color that it tastes like :-)

  2. Honey dew melon sounds like a good idea. I will try it! I don’t think my boys will be too excited about the green color so maybe some blueberries too!

Hi Tiffany…Yes blueberries are fabulous for hiding green :) You can also take the smoothie and pour them into popsicle molds…they make a great healthy frozen treat! YUM!!!

I just love how the chart has relevance across the lifespan.  Parents can use it as a ‘checklist’ once their baby is introduced to solids, young children can strive daily to earn all their magn...Read More - Colleen Bezeau, Editor & Publisher-Okanagan Child Magazine
