Making A Difference with Food Choices

posted by: Kia

Sometimes when problems seem so large and almost insurmountable, it can seem like the choices we make are insignificant, that it really doesn’t make a difference to help solve the problem.  The current health condition of families and kids in particular, across North America is one of those big problems.  There is a lot of finger pointing and blame shifting at who’s fault it is that childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing.  I think it’s going to take a lot of collaborative effort to truly fix this problem but one thing I know for sure…every family has the ability to be part of the solution!

With each meal you are making a decision, it is up to you whether that decision is part of the problem of part of the solution. It might mean that you: choose water for your family instead of pop, fruit instead of cake for dessert, buy local produce when you can, bake kale chips instead of buying a bag of chips, serve meatless meals at least once a week, give up fast food and learn to cook as a family. It makes a difference! When every family starts making those kinds of choices it creates a shift and a momentum. The overly processed foods are available and popular because of demand, it’s business, so if the demands shift the business will eventually shift. We are the ones that create that demand…it’s so true that we vote with our forks!!

I had a blast hosting Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution twitter party on Tuesday night and ever since then I’ve been thinking about the concept of his food revolution and the biggest thing I’ve taken away from it is the WE ARE the Food Revolution!  So don’t wait for government or big business to change things…start  making changes in your own homes in whatever way you can.  Even if it seems completely insignificant it is not!

You ARE the Food Revolution…start today…you make a difference! If you don’t feel like doing it for yourself…do it for your kids!
